The Hotel Where Churchill Planned to 'Set Europe Ablaze'
St Ermin’s looks, from the street, like any other late-Victorian hotel on a quiet Westminster corner. From 1938 it was something else entirely: the working headquarters of a Secret Intelligence Service section operating under cover, an entire floor taken over for meetings its own guests never knew were happening upstairs. In 1940, Winston Churchill asked a small group to gather there specifically to, in his words, ‘set Europe ablaze’, a meeting that founded the Special Operations Executive. The plan is said to have been sketched on the back of a menu card. Noel Coward attended guerrilla warfare classes in the building; so, unknowingly for everyone else in the room, did Anthony Blunt, later exposed as a member of the Cambridge Five.
None of this shows on the surface today beyond a small display case and a division bell in the lobby, installed so that any MP drinking there would know the moment a vote was called at Parliament, a short walk away.
