Mark Birley named the club after his wife almost as an afterthought, and it became the defining private members’ club of a generation regardless.

Built in a Coal Cellar Under Berkeley Square

Annabel’s opened on 4 June 1963 in the basement of 44 Berkeley Square, a William Kent house built in the 1740s, after workers dug out 6,000 tons of clay from what had been a coal cellar beneath the Clermont Club above. Birley borrowed £175,000 to build it, naming it for his wife Lady Annabel Vane-Tempest-Stewart, a decision she was not especially fond of at the time.

From the Beatles to Berkeley Square No. 46

The club drew the Rolling Stones, the Beatles and Princess Diana through the decades that followed, and after a 2007 sale to Richard Caring, it moved next door to occupy the whole of 46 Berkeley Square in 2018.
