A hotel that has hosted deposed European kings does not need a guest arriving by rideshare. A Claridge’s chauffeur booking is built around the same standard the hotel itself keeps, a doorman who knows your name before you reach the step, and a driver who is already there when you walk out.

The hotel began in 1812 as Mivart’s, a lodging house on Brook Street run by a French chef named James Mivart. William and Marianne Claridge, who ran the hotel next door at number 49, eventually took the business over, and by 1856 the combined property carried their name alone. Queen Victoria’s 1840 wedding drew enough European royalty through the door that Claridge’s became known as the Royal Hostelry, an unofficial annexe to Buckingham Palace for visiting crowned heads.
Richard D’Oyly Carte, founder of the Savoy, bought Claridge’s in 1893 and rebuilt it almost entirely by 1898. The Art Deco interiors most visitors now associate with the hotel came later, added through the 1920s by designer Basil Ionides and the Brook Street entrance by architect Oswald Milne in 1929.
Between 2016 and 2021, a five-level basement was excavated 22 metres beneath the Art Deco extension, largely by hand, so the hotel could keep operating without disturbing guests upstairs. The work added a penthouse with its own pool and a 1,800 square foot grand salon.
