St Albans takes its name from a man executed on a hill here during the Roman period, traditionally regarded as Britain’s first Christian martyr, and rather than fading into local legend the way most such stories do, the killing became the entire reason the city exists in its current form. An abbey went up on the traditional execution site, pilgrims followed, a town grew around the abbey to serve them, and the whole settlement eventually took the martyr’s name rather than keeping any of the Roman or Saxon names that came before it. The Roman city that predates all of this, Verulamium, was genuinely one of the largest in Roman Britain, complete with its own theatre, and its remains now sit quietly beside the medieval town that succeeded it, two different cities effectively stacked on the same ground. St Albans also sits barely fifteen minutes from Luton Airport, a genuinely exceptional proximity most of Hertfordshire can’t match. A chauffeur service St Albans relies on works across all of it, Roman, medieval and modern.
From the Mercedes S-Class for everyday journeys to the Rolls-Royce Phantom for special occasions. Full pricing for every vehicle is below.
Fifteen minutes to Luton genuinely changes what’s realistic from St Albans: a later departure than you’d normally risk, or a same-day return that would be unworkable almost anywhere else in the county. That proximity, alongside a genuine cathedral city centre, makes St Albans bookings some of the most straightforward we handle. Book your Chauffeur Service St Albans now.
St Albans genuinely holds two distinct cities within the same small footprint, Roman Verulamium and the medieval town that succeeded it around the Cathedral. Our Chauffeur Service St Albans treat each address individually rather than assuming one approach fits the whole AL1 postcode, part of the wider coverage detailed on our Hertfordshire chauffeur page.
Sumpter Yard

Verulamium Park
The remains of one of the largest cities in Roman Britain, including a genuine Roman theatre.
Cottonmill Lane
A country house hotel on the edge of the city, popular for private events and spa visits.

Notice how far ahead Luton sits on this list. No other town in our Hertfordshire coverage gets there faster than St Albans does, including nearby Beaconsfield on the Heathrow side.

The legend holds that Alban was a Roman citizen of Verulamium who sheltered a Christian priest, was so moved by his guest’s faith that he swapped clothes with him to allow his escape, and was executed in the priest’s place once the deception was discovered. Whatever the precise historical truth behind the story, early Christians clearly venerated the site strongly enough that a shrine, then an abbey, then a full cathedral eventually grew up around it, anchoring the entire later city to that single hillside. Current visiting information is published directly by St Albans Cathedral.
Verulamium itself, a short walk from the Cathedral, was genuinely one of only three settlements in Roman Britain granted the status of municipium, a significant legal designation, and its surviving theatre remains one of very few visible Roman theatres left standing anywhere in the country.

St Albans Cathedral hosts genuine civic and diocesan events throughout the year, and the surrounding streets can see pedestrian volume and parking restrictions well beyond a normal weekday. We check the Cathedral’s published events calendar before confirming a pickup point nearby, rather than assuming yesterday’s route still applies.
Verulamium Park and the museum draw genuinely heavy weekend crowds, particularly in summer, and the park’s own car park fills early on clear days. We can suggest a nearby alternative meeting point if timing looks tight, the same standard we apply for clients on a standing chauffeur account.
Typically 15 to 25 minutes under normal traffic, genuinely the fastest airport journey of any town in our Hertfordshire coverage.
