The name itself predates the shops by nearly a millennium. Records from around 1050 refer to ‘Cnihtebrycg’, Old English for the bridge of young men, a crossing over the long-vanished River Westbourne that now runs entirely underground beneath the streets it once named. Little of that history survives above ground, but Brompton Road, the district’s spine, still follows roughly the same route the old crossing led toward.

Sloane Street peels south from here toward Chelsea, lined with flagship boutiques that treat Knightsbridge as their natural starting point rather than a separate district. Beauchamp Place, a narrow turning barely wide enough for two cars to pass, was once known for lodging houses long before it became one of London’s more fashionable small dining streets. And to the east, Hyde Park Corner gathers five separate roads into a single roundabout, a junction most drivers only manage well once they’ve learned it the hard way, sitting just inside the Transport for London Congestion Charge zone.
