A Club Named After a Joke About Not Joining Clubs
The Groucho Club took its name, and its entire personality, from a joke: Groucho Marx’s line about never wanting to belong to any club that would have him as a member. It opened in 1985 as a deliberate rejection of London’s stuffier gentlemen’s clubs, and a decade later, a few doors along, Soho House opened in a single converted townhouse with no particular plan to become anything bigger. It now has outposts on five continents, but the original Dean Street house still runs exactly as it started.
Ronnie Scott’s, older than either by decades, has run more or less continuously on Frith Street since 1959, through however many changes of ownership and however many different eras of what jazz was supposed to sound like. Miles Davis and Ella Fitzgerald both played there; so, most nights, does someone considerably less famous who’ll be just as good in twenty years.
